If You Can't Say Something Nice, What Do You Say?Show Notes, December 9, 2009
Syndicating Your Content

Interview with, If You Can’t Say Something Nice, What DO You Say? author, Sarita Maybin.

We’ve all been told “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” This book provides practical approaches and positive phrases for those times Sarita Maybinwhen you need to say something NOT so nice. Learn how to constructively clue someone in, deflect the negative comment of a well-meaning friend, or let a business colleague know what he or she is doing drives you crazy — without destroying the relationship.

We’ll be talking about the book and you’ll find out answers to such questions as:

  • How do I know if I should confront a situation or just let it go?
  • How can I tactfully refuse unreasonable demands made by coworkers or friends?
  • How can I soften the sting when giving negative feedback or bad news?
  • What should I do if someone asks my opinion and I have nothing good to say?
  • How do I tell my boss a thing or two without appearing ugly or insubordinate?

What’s the best way to respond to nasty comments like “that’s a dumb idea,” “I knew you couldn’t do it” or “what were you thinking?”

Sarita shared her 3 Ps

  • don’t take it personally
  • remember this will pass
  • keep the big picture in mind

during our conversation about feedback. She also shared her 3 AIR Steps.

  • A – is the other person aware of the situation
  • I – what is the impact of the other person’s behavior
  • R – can you request them to look at what could be done differently

Sarita can be reached at her website, Sarita Maybin.

Breaking The IceI had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Helen Blanchard, author of Breaking  The Ice, about her book and her journey to becoming Toastmasters International’s first female President.

I was mesmerized by her journey through life and found, after reading her book, she was a trailblazer from the start.  Entering the workforce when women traditionally stayed at home to care for their families, she had to break down barriers with the men she trained.

It’s a fascinating read, and paralells the movement for women’s rights. I hope you enjoy the interview, and if you do, please share your comments!

SusanDaffronVarious surveys have shown that 80% of people want to write a book, yet most people never get beyond dreaming about being a published author.

In this interview Susan Daffron shares tips on the following:

  • How Susan got beyond her big “stuckness” on two book projects that had been languishing in old discarded Word files for literally years.
  • How to find and repurpose writing you may already have in other forms.
  • How to determine if you can actually sell your book once it’s finished.
  • Which areas of the publishing process you can outsource, depending on your skills (and one you definitely should).
  • How to publish your book “on the cheap” and avoid the stigma of subsidy/vanity presses.
  • Numbers and acronyms you need to know about once you enter the wild and wooly world of self-publishing.

If you’ve got a book project you wish you could finish, join Susan Daffron and take your first step toward making that dream a reality.
