WordPress Mastery

WordPress Mastery, 101

Nov 3, 2010 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM PT
Nov 10, 2010 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM PT
Nov 17, 2010 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM PT

I remember when I first discovered WordPress. I had been blogging since Feb. 2005 at Blogger.com. I had been attending online expos at the time and, in January 2007 learned about WordPress and self hosted sites.

I programmed my first blog, moving North San Diego Business to a self hosted blog. Through the years I’ve chosen to focus just on WordPress blogs. To me it’s the heart of my content syndication strategies.

However, I’m sensitive to the budget issues facing the small business community and have found a WordPress blog service, Free Blog Factory. They fill a great need in having a self hosted blog, but not having the budget to have the blog custom designed and built.

Free Blog Factory is hosting a free webinar tonight, November 3, 2010, then again November 10th and 17th entitled WordPress Mastery, 101 to show you how easy it is to use WordPress as your website. If you have time, sign up and check it out.

If you check it out, let me know what you think? Is it a service that might benefit you?

Debra Simpson Women Bloggers to Watch in 2008I had the distinct pleasure of being named one of the Women Bloggers to Watch in 2008. It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers. I’ve been touting blogging since February of 2005, when I started my first blog over at Blogger. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen eyes glaze over and roll to the back of heads. What is blogging?  Only kids blog, right? Finally, blogging arrives as a business tool.

Let me share with you why blogging is so beneficial to a business.  Let’s say I visited your site a month ago, I saw what I saw and I read what I read. If I visit your site today, will I see what I saw and read what I read? Will anything be different?  If not, why should I come back to your site?

The two most popular free blogging platforms are Blogger and WordPress. You can start there. Here’s a document that shares the differences between these two popular free platforms. Here at Magic In Blogging you’ll find how-to videos for common tasks .  As I work on adding videos, please let me know if there’s a specific task at Blogger or WordPress.com that you need a "how-to" for.

Now, if what you want is a totally robust blog like North San Diego Business, or Magic In Blogging,  you can have blog software installed and programmed for your site. I used WordPress because of it’s extendability, flexibility and the vast number of plugins available. It’s also very user friendly.

Blogging is here. It’s an essential asset to any business web presence. Think about embracing it!

Here is the actual post:

Women are blogging in record numbers these days – so may blogs, so much content and so little time to check them all out. Each month during 2008, I will be highlighting dozens of blogs written by women, on a variety of topics, genres and locations around the globe. These women share one thing in common. They have a goal, a theme and a purpose in their lives. Please do stop by their blogs, check them out, leave a comment and see how many great relationships you can develop online in the next 12 months.

Heart Book Series by Sheryl Roush

This is the Heart Book Series site I programmed for Sheryl Roush. Sheryl has been an icon in the women’s community for many years now. Several years ago Sheryl complied a book full of inspirational passages, the Heart of the Mother. She’s also put together the Heart of a Woman and has just published the Heart of the Holidays.

She is using her Heart Book Series as the central internet site for an on-going conversation with the women who’s works are published in her three Heart books. Take a look at her site, and, given it’s the holiday season, pick up a couple of her fabulous books as gifts.

Sheryl Roush is an internationally adored inspirational speaker, helping to rekindle spirit, hope and love. Her own story is one of strong faith, overcoming rape, twice contemplating suicide, filing business bankruptcy, and surviving domestic violence. Today, she encourages women who have experienced similar, including battered and homeless women, bringing hope into their lives.

She is a 10-time author, her most recent and passionate work, Heart of the Holidays, is a touching collection of original poems, stories and tributes to our most holiday traditions. Her other books include Sparkle-Tudes (scripture plus quotations by and for women), and Heart of a Woman (stories and poems celebrating our inner strength, wisdom and faith). Sheryl is also a contributor to The Princess Principle: Women Helping Women Discovering their Royal Spirit.

Sheryl has presented throughout Canada and the US, as well as Southeast Asia, Australia, Middle East, and the U.K. She has on programs alongside: Olivia Newton-John, Art Linkletter, Good Morning America’s Joan Lunden, Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul), and Commander in Chief’s Geena Davis.

Twice honored for her service to women in the community, Sheryl was crowned “Ms. Heart of San Diego” and is this year’s “Queen of Hope.”

What kind of blogs do I program?

When I started talking about blogs in March 2005, I was using Blogger. In January 2007 I discovered WordPress. WordPress.com is the free WordPress site. There you can easily start your blogging adventure. However, your blogging url will be http://magicinwords.wordpress.com and you won’t have the flexibility of WordPress until you have it installed on your hosting service.

Why do I like WordPress?

I want to create passive income from the Internet. WordPress allows me the ease and flexibility of putting up a search engine friendly site that anyone can keep updated without programming skills. It’s the perfect answer to soneone who’s a solopreneur or small business owner. It’s easily customizable, has thousands of themes to choose from and, the plugins take the pain out of any task.

What are themes and plugins?

Themes are the design of the site. You might think of them as templates with unique looks. You can visit WordPress’ Theme Viewer to get an idea of the variety of themes that exist for WordPress. Themes are either one, two, three or four columns wide. The “style” can be changed through the Cascading Style Sheet. Very fun to play with!

Plugins extend the usability of WordPress. There are plugins for contact forms, surveys, tags, rss feeds, the list goes on and on . . . . Visit the WordPress Plugin page to see examples of what plugins can do for a WordPress site.
